Late spring
The drying room, again
Three wet weeks and nothing came off the line properly. We moved the
racks to the east wall, where the morning sun lands for two hours, and
the linen finally stopped smelling of the room.
Worth writing down: cloth dried slowly in still air takes dye more
evenly afterwards. We lost a fortnight and learned something.
Early spring
Indigo, eighth dip
The vat went sharp on the fourth day and we nearly lost it. Fed it
bran and left it alone for a week, which is the only thing that has
ever worked.
Eight dips on the refectory runner. The first four do almost nothing
you can see; the last two do everything.
Winter
Ash from the stove
We have been glazing with ash off our own stove since the autumn. It
changes with whatever we have been burning, which means no two firings
match and we have stopped pretending otherwise.
One client asked for the variation in writing, as a condition. That
felt like permission.
